Augustas from batch 18 (CBS): What advice would you give to someone considering studying abroad?

Deciding to study abroad through GLOBE/TREBLE has been one of, if not the best, decisions I have made in my life so far.

Not only does studying abroad equip you with a broader academic and professional skillset through studying courses that might not be available at the home university or are structured differently.

Most importantly, studying abroad gives you the opportunity to meet people who will become friends for life and experience truly unforgettable moments (often outside the academic setting), which can end up teaching a life lesson or two. Hence, I believe it is important to keep in mind that studying and living in a foreign country adds much more value than one might think when considering applying to TREBLE or any other exchange program.

And to maximize the experiences and meaningful connections, being open from the get-go is key. While it can be intimidating to reach out and speak to people you have never met before, they will, 99% of the time, be just as interested in hearing about you and how you ended up in their country. Therefore, my biggest advice is to utilize your genuine curiosity about how it is to live in another country and be open to everything during this experience. And remember to enjoy it!

Max from Batch 18 (CBS): What are the differences between your home university and the other universities?

Coming from CBS, my academic experience before GLOBE had been marked by dense, highly theoretical syllabi and a teaching style emphasizing deeply analytical, formal academic writing and problem-solving projects. Here, courses were delivered by expert researchers in one-way lectures held in large halls with high ceilings. Studying at UNC and CUHK felt like welcome changes of pace to me!

At UNC, I encountered a more hands-on approach to business education against the quaint backdrop of Chapel Hill’s centuries-old campus and its lush tree canopy. Here, courses were taught across shorter but more frequent lectures in intimate classrooms by professors from highly diverse backgrounds, each boasting extensive corporate experience. They strongly encouraged and incentivized active participation, which led to rich class discussions. Through numerous individual and group assignments and presentations, we acquired tools and practical skills directly transferable to the workplace.

At CUHK, the teaching methods were similar to those I experienced at UNC, but with a special emphasis on Asian- and, in particular, Chinese business problems in the syllabi. Fascinating casework with Asian businesses and multinationals with operations in China taught us essential lessons on the region’s diverse and complex cultural contexts and the importance of sophisticated adaptation to these! Only one stereotypical preconception about CUHK proved accurate in my experience: The quantitative courses were indeed challenging! However, it was inspiring to learn from professors who were genuine wizards with numbers.

Lisa from batch 18 (CBS): What advise would you give someone considering applying?

First of all, I can only recommend you all to apply to GLOBE/TREBLE. It’s really been a life-changing journey and not a second have I regretted my decision.

But in terms of application, my biggest advise for you all is really being honest and open about who you are and why you really want to be part of GLOBE/TREBLE.

It’s a common misconception that only the students with the highest GPAs and most impressive CVs are selected, but that is really not true. It’s about selecting a batch of students who are not only able to study hard together but also passionate to travel the world together.

The interviewers want to get a sense of your personality and character to find students who they can see thriving in the GLOBE/TREBLE environment. So let your guard down, tell your story and don’t be afraid to show your passion for the programme!

Jacky from Batch 18 (CUHK): What has been your favourite academic experience so far?

The overall GLOBE experience has been an academic journey like no other, combining rigorous coursework with invaluable cultural exchange, allowing me to gain a truly global perspective on business and education from three distinct regions around the world.

Each university added a unique dimension to our learning. At UNC, interactive case studies and discussions fostered engagement, while CUHK immersed us in the Asian and Chinese business environment, showcasing regional economic vibrancy and cultural nuances. CBS deepened our understanding of financial institutions and capitalism, introducing essay-based assessments that encouraged us to express ideas beyond Hong Kong’s exam-focused approach.

What stood out most for me was the three-day negotiation class at UNC. Through intensive and interactive sessions, we learned practical negotiation strategies and skills that are applicable in a wide range of settings, from casual encounters to formal business negotiations. Moreover, mock negotiation exercises with my peers added a dynamic, hands-on element to the learning process.

Ultimately, what made the GLOBE experience so unique was how it highlighted the distinct approaches to learning and education across continents. Each environment, with its unique teaching styles and academic focuses, enriched my understanding of global business and cross-cultural collaboration. This experience highlighted the importance of embracing diverse perspectives, adapting to different learning models, and applying the knowledge gained to real-world situations. It has been a journey of growth, discovery, and inspiration – one that I will carry with me as I continue to learn and grow in my career and life 🙂

Ivan from batch 18 (CUHK): What is my biggest cultural shock?

Never did I imagine living in both Chapel Hill and Copenhagen with such a carefree state of mind. These two places share one similarity: a slower pace of life.

As a typical Hong Konger, with every minute packed, slowing down wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Rushing is our second nature. In the U.S., I felt frustrated waiting endlessly for buses that never seemed to arrive. Those moments, however, gradually became opportunities to reflect, clear my mind, or simply let my thoughts wander.

A weekend mountain trip to Asheville pulled us further away from the rush. It was just us, nature, and pure joy. We competed fiercely in pickleball, stayed up late chatting, and hiked through hills, all without a care for the ticking clock.

In Copenhagen, life slowed even further. Biking through the city, with the sun setting as early as 4 p.m., the shorter days naturally reminded me to wind down and rest. Sometimes, doing less—pausing, resting, or just being a chill person—can recharge you in ways that propel you forward.

I’ll miss the random walks to unknown corners of the city, sunbathing by the sea, and lingering over coffee for hours while the world moved around me. This slower, more mindful pace has been a refreshing and precious change, one I’ll carry with me long after I leave.

Karine from batch 18 (CUHK): Question: What has been the most notable social experience with your batch so far?

Honestly, it’s so hard to pick just one experience because every single moment with this batch has been so notable! From my very first prom party in Chapel Hill, to that night cruise ride in Hong Kong, and my first time traveling with non-hongkongers to Barcelona, it has been a whirlwind of “firsts” that I’ll cherish forever. What truly stands out isn’t just the places or the big events, it is the PEOPLE!!

Back when I chose to study this exchange program, I didn’t expect it to be this impactful! But when it finally came time to say goodbye, exchanging hugs and farewells, it hits me - these people, these memories, will be something I look back on in 10 years with the biggest smile on my face:)) It is just amazing how these shared moments, big or small, brought us all closer together! Thank you Batch18 for making this chapter of my life so notable and hope to see everyone sometime again!! 🌍✨🫶🏻
